While it is hard to know exactly how many breeds of sheep there are in the world, there are probably more than a thousand. There are more than 50 recognized in the US. Each year, more breeds are introduced (to the US); mostly via semen and embryos. A breed is a group of individuals that have a distinctive appearance and similar set of characteristics. They have usually been developed by deliberate selection, though not always.
